Hey!
It’s been a while since I posted any sort of update on here.
To be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve done a lot on here.
I’ve grown quite bad at reading, commenting, posting notes, all the rest of it.
I think I got tired of it (which happened a few times before), but let the break get too long that I ended up just going “huh, I think I prefer things this way.”
I still try to check in with others every now and again, but I’m not going to burn myself out the way I did before.
I’d much rather put that energy into actually making things.
So, with that said… yeah, I made a website.
You can find it here: freethefiction.com
It’s something I’ve wanted for a really long time.
I still love Substack, I think it’s by far the easiest editor I’ve used, and I love the community it has built. It gels with my brain in a lot of ways.
Having said that I’m at a point where I really want to personalise things to look the way I want them to look, and to be able to show others something that doesn’t come across as a blog, but more as a large portfolio of work.
So I’ve created Free the Fiction, a website that houses all of my Substack posts.
I’ll still be posting on here for the time being, but a lot of my focus will be put over there and getting everything to look the way I want it to look.
On top of this, I have also created a website for my journalism, as I’ve grown very eager to make more pieces in that field.
You can find it here: newnews.press
I’m still up in the air about the name New News, but I like how it sounds a little quirky whilst also getting its point across. I also really like how clean the logo is, even if there are a few bits and pieces I plan on fixing up over time.
I plan on putting a lot more work into my journalism over the next while. This might mean a little less fiction, but I’m hoping the standard does not drop between the two, and I hope you’ll all stick around for the journalism stuff.
I have a piece coming out over on the website shortly (if we all cross our fingers, it’ll be Monday the 17th), where I’ve collaborated with several developers of indie games to find out what makes them tick, and what the broader games industry could be learning from them.
I’ve put a lot of time into formatting both of these websites, and ensuring that all of my Substack posts look good over there, so it would be awesome to have a few people check it out, even if it’s only to have a short poke around.
Anyway, that’s all for the moment. Check out the websites if you’re interested. If not, I look forward to seeing you here :)
If you do happen to look at them, and you notice something on there looks unfinished, please DM me, as that shouldn’t be the case and I’ll get around to fixing it.
Cheers
Also, side question for anyone who has switched platforms before… should I export all of my Substack subscribers to the new page? Or is that a silly thing to do?
Feel free to export me to the new page.
This is very interesting because I’m trying to figure out a way to do something similar. Only, in my idea, I’m going to put all my fiction on my website blog, behind a password paywall, and just use Substack the way I used to use MailChimp. Monthly email updates. This would allow me to do exactly what you said, turn my website into a sort of portfolio for my fiction work. I’ve moved my Substack posts to my website but the organizing of it will take a considerable amount of time. You have given me food for thought if only because I like to use my website as a back up if nothing else, of my posts.
